Cabrillo Tools in General:

CT01

What is Cabrillo Tools?
WT4I Contest Tools is a suite of three (3) utilities, Cabrillo Converter (CC), WT4I Log Checker (LC) and Master Call (MC), written by Bruce, WT4I.

WT4I Log Checker, Cabrillo Converter, and Master Call were written primarily for contest managers and log checkers, to help them expedite checking logs and to produce contest results is a timely manner.

However, all three utilities will be of great use to any contester and should be considered as part of their contest log arsenal along with their favorite logging software.

CT02

What is Cabrillo?
Cabrillo is a relatively new standard format for submitting contest logs electronically. For more information please reference the Cabrillo site: http://www.kkn.net/~trey/cabrillo

CT03

Will WT4I Contest Tools work on my computer?
The tools requires a recent Microsoft Virtual Machine. If you are running Windows 98 or later you should be OK. Windows 95 users are OK provided they have installed Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later. Otherwise the Virtual Machine can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site: http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm

CT04

Which contest organizations use the Cabrillo format for submitting electronic (e-mail) logs?
The A.R.R.L. will only accept e-mail logs if they are in Cabrillo format, starting with the November 2000 Sweepstakes. As time goes by, more and more contest organizers and managers will realize the virtues of a single format for all logs received electronically and they will probably follow suit.

CT05

Do I as a contester really need these utilities?
Yes, if you want to check your log thoroughly and also have your files in the required format required by the organizers.

CT06

So what are the three utilities used for?
Cabrillo Converter will take just about any ASCII text log in column format and convert it into CABRILLO format. The converter covers most CW, SSB and RTTY contests and more contests are constantly being added.

WT4I Log Checker is an extremely useful tool for checking your log for obvious typing errors, invalid call signs, dupes etc..

Master Call generates and maintains a Master.cal file that WT4I Log Checker uses to compare the log being checked against.

CT07

I am a contest manager. How would my team of log checkers take advantage of the tools?
Here is our vision on how the tools would be used by actual contest log checkers:

Phase I - Log Gathering

In the first month or two, contestors submit their logs. The log checking team should focus on gathering the logs and making sure the proper information is provided. Contestors also expect feedback as to whether their log was received. As the logs are received, they should be converted to Cabrillo format. (This becomes easier as more contests switch to the Cabrillo format.) Logs can be converted to Cabrillo using the Cabrillo Converter tool. Once the logs are converted, they should be stored in a separate directory for each category. (This will make life easier later.)

Phase II - Master.cal File Build

Building a contest specific Master.cal file is incredibly easy with Master Call. The Master Call tool allows the user to select entire directories of Cabrillo format logs at one time. Simply select "Load Logs" from the File menu, Navigate to the appropriate directory, select the first log in the directory, scroll to the last log in the directory, left-click on the last log in the directory, and then select "open." All the call signs from the logs will be loaded into the program. The user can then select the appropriate filter to "check-mark" the call signs to be included in the master call sign file. Save the checked call signs as Master.cal. This file needs to be in the same directory as the WT4I Log Checker executable.

Phase III - Log Checking

The WT4I Log cChecker allows the user to look at each log in many different ways. Make sure you check out all the options under the menus. Each QSO is color coded. Check the Tools->Change Colors menu item for a legend of the different colors. CLC does automatic scoring upon loading the log and excluding QSOs. The bottom portion of the main window is a selection area. You can select multiple items to be displayed in the QSO area. The labels above the columns can be clicked on to change the selection area.

Phase IV - Final Summary

WT4I Log Checker will keep track of the scores as you check the logs. When you first start the program each time, go to the Contest Summary and load the last summary. The program will automatically update the file as you add logs. I suggest a separate summary file for each category. The final summary has one line per log and is sorted by score.

CT08

I like to manage my own files. Can I get just a traditional Zip file rather than use the installer for the tools updates?

The current self extracting zip file automatically kicks off the installer. There are some users that would rather manage their files manually rather than using the installer. The following instructions give information of how to get the files out of the self extracting zip with out running the installer: How to Skip the Install

WT4I Log Checker:

LC01

The Cabrillo format appears to be structured on fixed columns. With so many different contest logging programs and so many contests, there is bound to be one that misses the mark and gets a field in the wrong column. If this happens, will WT4I Log Checker still read the log?
Yes, provided the number of columns match.

WT4I Log Checker is not designed around fixed columns but rather around the number of columns and their order. When the log is first read in, WT4I Log Checker treats the contest generically with a two pass scan. During the first pass through the log, the column positions are determined. On the second pass, the fields are identified and separated.

Treating every log generically at first makes it easy to support many contests before they are actually defined by the contest sponsor in Cabrillo format. WT4I Log Checker simply needs to know the number of the exchange fields.

LC02

I noticed that although WT4I Log Checker fully supports most of the major contests, automatic scoring is not currently supported for some of the contests. Why and what are the limitations?
The scoring modules for some of contests are time consuming to develop and fully test. As time allows, the Cabrillo Tools team is constantly adding new modules.

Rather than limiting the WT4I Log Checker to just the contests that are fully supported, it was decided that the program provided significant functionality without the scoring module.

Without a scoring module, the log can still be checked for obvious typing errors and invalid call signs. The only major limitation is that the contest scoring summary is inactive.

LC03

I loaded my converted log into WT4I Log Checker but notice that my category and claimed score are not showing.
Please read CC05 for further instructions.

LC04

Some of the call signs in my log are colored blue, why is that?
Any call sign in blue just means that it is not in the current Master Call data base.

LC05

Is there a way that I can change an obvious typing error in a logged call sign or other received data?
Yes, just double click on the entry you wish to amend. An Edit Qso window with all the logged information will be displayed. Make your amendments and click OK.

NOTE: If you changed any data that could affect your score, click Tools then Recalculate Score.

LC06

Why are some call signs in red? Are they dupes?
Yes. If you want to see a list of duplicate call signs, click View > View dupes. You will notice that all dupes are a given a zero (0) point value. This conforms to contest rules, so leave these entries in your log!

LC07

I'd like to see which bands I contacted a specific station on. Is this possible?
It sure is. Locate the call sign you wish to check on in the Callsigns window and double click it. All log entries for that specific call sign will show up in the main log window. To return to the full log, click View and View All Calls.

LC08

To possibly add to my CQ Zone and W.A.S. awards, is there a way for me to check my log for this information?
To find out which zones you logged, click on the Zone button. All zones worked, will be displayed. If you want to see exactly which band(s) you worked a particular zone on, double click the zone number. All contacts in the log for that specific zone, will be displayed.

For W.A.S., click the QTH button and proceed as for Zones.

LC09

I was changing colors and now I would like to go back to the default colors. How do I get the original default colors back?
Exit the WT4I Log Checker program and delete the CLC_Color.ini file from the executable directory. WT4I Log Checker will go back to the default colors on the next program initiation.

Cabrillo Converter:

CC01

On the opening form, Cabrillo Converter will not accept my call sign, why?
If, during a specific contest, you operated 'portable' (/), 9U/xxxx etc., you must still enter the EXACT call sign you gave when you bought and registered the software. Your total registration is the combination of both the call sign and the registration code.

Once you have successfully passed the registration checks, you will get an opportunity to enter the portable call sign in the log.

CC02

I loaded Cabrillo Converter, selected a contest, entered my call sign and registration code then clicked OK. All I get is a "Thank you, Cabrillo Converter is loading" message and nothing happens. Why won't the program start?
Most likely the program is looking for the required data files. To make sure this will not happen with any of the Cabrillo Tools, make sure that the data files, cty.dat and states.dat, are in the same directory as the executables.

CC03

My log loaded successfully but I do not see the drive, directory or file name where the file was loaded from. I don't see the number of QSOs loaded either. What is wrong?
Cabrillo Converter and Cabrillo Log Checker main forms are initially sized to 640X480. More than likely part of the window is below the screen. Move and re-size the window or maximize the window and all the info will be visible.

CC04

I see that Cabrillo Converter seems to support more contests than are defined on Trey's Cabrillo site. How is that possible?
The Cabrillo Tools team has made its best guess as to how each contest would fit into Cabrillo format. As contest sponsors clearly define the format for the contest, Cabrillo Converter and WT4I Log Checker will be updated to reflect these changes.

An example of this is the 2000 CQ WW WPX Contest. The 2000 rules had provisions for accepting Cabrillo format but the format is not specifically tied down for this contest.

More and more contest sponsors are considering the Cabrillo format. As they are defined, the Cabrillo Tools team is committed to adding support.

CC05

After assigning the required buttons, I saved the converted log and then loaded it into WT4I Log Checker but I notice that my category, claimed score and soapbox sections are empty?
No problem, you just forgot to fill in the Cabrillo Header in Cabrillo Converter.

You can either go back to Cabrillo Converter or while still in WT4I Log Checker, click Edit > Cabrillo Header and fill in all relevant information, then click Apply > OK. Your input will take effect immediately. Don't forget to Save As and name the file, CALLSIGN.LOG, when you have finished!

CC06

Ah, but I don't have WT4I Log Checker. I used a text editor to view the Cabrillo file.
You really ought to consider purchasing the complete Cabrillo Tools suite, in the mean time, just go through the procedure outlined in the above paragraph.

CC07

During the ARRL RTTY Round Up I used RTTY by WF1B software. After converting my log to the Cabrillo format with Cabrillo Converter, I loaded the log into WT4I Log Checker and noticed that there was no record of QSO numbers sent to me by 'DX' stations that I had worked, why?
In order for this QSO number to be recorded correctly, once all the required buttons (??) have been assigned, Cabrillo Converter users MUST merge the contents of the tenth (10th) column with the ninth (9th) column. The ninth column should indicate the states or provinces you contacted and should be assigned as Received Exchange (R Exch).

After R Exch is assigned, click the button again, then select 'Merge next column into blank fields', at the very top of the available choices. Then click File, Save As and save your work as, CALLSIGN.log.

To confirm that everything is now OK, load the saved file back into WT4I Log Checker. The QSO numbers received, should now be in the R Exch column along with the state or province abbreviations.

CC08

I'm 'DX' and a RCKrtty user. When I try to save the Cabrillo conversion, I keep getting an error message asking for a sent QTH.
1: In CQWW RTTY, stations outside the USA and Canada do not have to send a QTH. However, DX stations MUST enter their DXCC country abbreviation in the QTH field.

Example: Exchange Sent

Call TY1RY RST 599 ZONE 35 QTH TY

2: Stations outside the USA and Canada must also assign the ninth (9) button (??) as Received QTH (R QTH) in order to record any US states or VE provinces worked.

CC09

I am trying to convert a BARTG HF RTTY Contest log. This contest exchanges time. My original log has the "QSO Time" and the "Received Time" but no "Sent Time." Can I convert this log?
Yes, Identify the QSO's time. As long as the contest is "BARTG-RTTY," the time for the sent exchange will automatically be inserted from the QSO's time.

CC10

Will Cabrillo Convertor convert to and from ADIF?
No, not at this time. Cabrillo Converter will take just about any ASCII text log in "column format" and convert it into CABRILLO format.

Master Call Maintenance:

MC01

I want to merge 2 super check partial call sign databases to build a Master.cal file to use with WT4I Log Checker. Will Master Call allow me to do this.
Yes, simply load the first master call sign file and then immediately load the second master call sign database. The master call sign databases will be merged.

MC02

What kinds of master call sign databases will Master Call read?
Master Call will load CT, TRMaster, WriteLog, WF1B, and WT4I Log Checker master call sign databases.

MC03

As a contest log checker, I would like to build the master call sign database for use with WT4I Log Checker. How easy is this with Master Call?

Building a contest specific Master.cal file is incredibly easy with Master Call. The Master Call tool allows the user to select entire directories of Cabrillo format logs at one time. Simply select "Load Logs" from the File menu, Navigate to the appropriate directory, select the first log in the directory, scroll to the last log in the directory, left-click on the last log in the directory, and then select "open." All the call signs from the logs will be loaded into the program. Using the count filters built into Master Call, the user can then select the appropriate filter to "check-mark" the call signs to be included in the master call sign file.

MC04

What types of logs will Master Call extract call signs from?
MasterCall will only extract call signs from Cabrillo format logs. Use Cabrillo Converter to convert ASCII logs into Cabrillo format prior to loading into Master Call.

MC05

Master Call indicates only total 32736 call signs in the status bar. I know my call sign database is larger than this. What is happening?
This issue has been addressed in V2.00c and later. Master Call now separates US/VE call signs from all other calls. This should allow much larger call signs databases. Each separation (US/VE, all others) is limited to view the first 32736 entries. Internally, Master Call is sized to load databases up to 150,000 call signs.

Unfortunately, the Checked List Box Component used to display the call signs is limited to 32736 entries. The remaining entries are loaded into the internal database but only the first 32736 are displayed.

MC06

What formats can the master call sign databases be saved as?
Master Call will save as WT4I Log Checker, Writelog, and WF1B format. To save as a WriteLog super check partial file, make sure the extension is ".dta". For Cabrillo Log checker and WF1B, make sure the extension is ".cal".
